While there is talk of a Category 6 and even a Category 7 standard coming soon, Category 5 is today's highest standard for twisted pair. The Electronics Industry Association/ Telecommunications Industry Association (EIA/TIA.) sets these world-side standards. However, many cable manufacturers are not waiting for the new standards to be approved and are building their cable to higher specifications to anticipate the coming changes. Category 5e represents this new generation of cable. While the original Category 5 standard was built around specifications that would allow speeds of 100 megabits per second, Category 5e cabling promises speeds of up to ten times faster. Unfortunately, since no standards for higher speeds yet exist, data contractors can do no more that certify cable at the old Category 5 standard until EIA/TIA catches up with the market. In addition to Category 5e cable, a properly structured wiring solution should also include jacks, patch cords, and patch panels that also meet the anticipated standards. A wiring solution is only as good as its weakest component.
